What is the difference between JASO and API?

JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization) is an organization formed by Japan's major vehicle manufacturers. It’s the Japanese alternative to the API (American Petroleum Institute) specifications, as these did not meet the specific requirements of modern Japanese engines.

What does JASO MA2 mean?

The newer JASO MA2 specification provides higher friction values in the wet clutch, compared to previous standards. They give optimum clutch operation in high power models. JASO MA2 is the right motorcycle oil for high-performance and high-torque motorcycles.

How do the API classify oils?

The API grades are defined by 2 letters eg SG. Later and higher performance engines will need oil complying to higher specifications such as API SL. For many bikes, our oils will often far exceed these requirements.

Where can I find the oil specifications for a bike?

The machine’s owner’s handbook will detail the viscosity and API/ JASO requirements. However, many of our customers rely on our MIKE TECHNIK Technical Data service. It puts key service data, specifications, filling quantities, diagnostic codes, wiring diagrams and electronic Haynes manuals on your desktop or mobile, for 1000’s of machines. Motorcycle engine oils for four-stroke motorcycles

Most modern motorcycles have combined engine & gearbox lubrication and a wet clutch. This creates additional requirements for engine oil and makes it critical the correct motorcycle oil is used to preserve all 3 functions.
